The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1)

I was entertained and intrigued throughout but really put off by the cliffhanger ending. Jemisin did get me to pick up the second part, though, so I guess I liked things well enough. I don't get on with fantasy as a general rule but this is such a fresh take on the genre that for the most part I wasn't even aware of it. It makes effective use of a pseudo-African setting to create a strange but familiar feel, and plays with massive time scales and planetary level cataclysms while simultaneously staying really close to the lived experiences of a small number of characters. Definitely worth giving a try, just know you won't get a satisfying reading experience with just this book so you more or less need to commit to the series.
