Marking this as read even though I only finished the first novel in this omnibus (I decided to pick this up in case I felt like reading more dying earth).

Vance excels at colourful, vivid descriptions. The dying earth conceit is refreshing and must have been even more innovative back in its day. The picaresque plotting also works well, as does the structure of loosely connected short stories to paint a picture of a world.

But similarly to my experience with Moorcock, although I can see why this is 'good' fantasy fiction, it just doesn't grab me as *fiction*.
