This book begins in post-Katrina New Orleans with Jonah & Luz – a young couple, just finishing up high school that fall in love and get pregnant.  Luz is sent back to Mexico by her father when he finds out she is pregnant.  At this point her story takes many dips and turns and in some ways it’s a bit unbelievable all the trials that she goes through.  Jonah sets out to find her and when he does find her she is changed.  To me this story showed how certain events that occur in a person’s life can seriously alter the course of their life as they know it.  And, how things can change people and either help them grow together or apart.  The note by Katy Simpson Smith on the back of the book talks about it being a “tale of borders – national, familial, psychological” – I think that sums this book up well.  It kept me interested to find out what happens for this couple in the end.
