The book is definitely ambitious: it's got well known historical figures as protagonists, a general introduction to Dante's life and to the Inferno, a brief detour into the madness of war, an overview of religious opposition to freedom of expression, and cold blooded murder.

The casualty of all that ambition is depth. It's a passable murder mystery, but I found it formulaic, one-dimensional and a little dull.
