it was amazing

Beautiful Bad had everything I want in a psychological thriller: the shades of good and evil, how our experiences shape and change us (for better or worse). There are basically three major characters in this book so the work doesn’t get bogged down with red herrings, which is brilliant because I found myself reading for the “why” not the “who”, which is always such a satisfying experience. Ward’s book is layered and twisted and beautifully terrifying in its realness. There are trigger warnings for anyone who has spent time in war-torn countries. These sections were difficult for me to read because they hit a little too close to home, but they were vital to the plot and the character development so I’m glad I stuck with it. I did have to put it down at times, though. Just to breathe. The plot unfolds in different time frames and Ward’s mastery at revealing the layers of her characters was truly brilliant. I’ll read anything this woman writes.
