it was ok

I liked the first book in this series quite a bit, and was unhappy to discover that this series takes a very substantial sophomore slump. Jemisin apparently spent all of her world building and narrative drive on the first book. Where the Fifth Season was ambitious and expansive, Obelisk Gate is safe and and closed in, and limps along at a refugee's walking pace. All of the fantastic variety of the Fifth Season gives way to a tiny handful of settings. Essun stays in the same underground cavern dealing with local politics, while her daughter finds and enrolls in a renegade school for orogenes that is about 1/10 as interesting or exciting as the Fulcrum Essun grew up in.

2.5 stars. Not exactly upset I continued the series, but disappointed that this couldn't come close to the quality of the first book.
