I'm glad I've read this book because it is so famous. It's quite funny in parts, but it doesn't really have the impact that a more modern novel does. Because the characters are so sketchily drawn (and are, in fact symbolic rather than realistic), it is not easy to get into their story, or really care what happens to them. Besides which, the plot line is so exaggerated that you couldn't see it as a naturalistic novel anyway - it's more Gulliver's Travels than Middlemarch! Which, I suppose, is the whole point. Don't come to this book if you are looking for a well-crafted and engrossing novel because, actually, it entertains at the level of a satirical sketch.
