The title "The Marriage Plot" refers to a genre of mid 18 to 19 century novels whose plot revolves around courtship and its mishaps and that end in marriage. After that, the reader is to assume that the protagonists will live happily. In this novel, the love triangle is formed by three college students at Brown university: Mitchell, a serious poet/dreamer majoring in Religious studies; Madeleine, a patrician beauty majoring in English and Leonard, a brilliant, troubled Biology major. Mitchell is obsessed with Madeleine, who loves Leonard, who is too troubled to truly love anyone but who comes to depend on Madeleine. The story ends in a marriage, or something like it, but there is no assurance of "happy ever after".
