really liked it

Very beautiful book. A gem, really. In short chapters of descriptive prose (not a word of dialog), the author describes the lives of women sent to America from Japan to be "picture brides." These women contracted to be wives based on sent photos from Japanese men living in America. You can imagine the results of some of these unions... The story brings the lives of these brides up to the time of the internment of Japanese Americans in camps at the time of WW II. A heart-felt, sad, and even once in a while a touch of humor in this lovely book.
