Truth be told, the title story in this collection feels like the worst. Its epiphany is petulant and too expected, not interesting, not striking. Of course, the rest of the collection, for the most part, is striking, coming to moments of crisis and decision. The crux of "Sexy," for instance, is one that strings the readers along for a good while, feeling disgusting and intriguing and knowing and wanting to deny what they know in their hearts is coming. It is these moments, along with Lahiri's fine craft that carries this through. It is a touching collection that stumbles here and there, but is largely magnificent.
