Welcome to Nevermoor, the first is a richly imagined, magical world by debut Australian author, Jessica Townsend. A world which has shades of Harry Potter but is unique enough in its own right that it can be enjoyed by all, young or the young at heart. Nevermoor is a place where transport is by the brolly rail, where bedrooms change physically to meet your wants or needs, where there are gigantic, talking cats and energy is called Wunder. It is also very reminiscent of days gone by with horses and carriages as well as the wireless. It is into this new world that the main star, Morrigan Crow, finds herself on the eve of her eleventh birthday. Doomed to die on this night along with all other children born on Eventide, she is suddenly whisked away from her horrid family by Jupiter North to a place of fantasy. Here Morrigan finds herself competing in the four trials if she wants to remain in Nevermoor, becoming a member of the Wunderous society.

Morrigan was an absolute delight, with her black hair and pale features, as she tentatively, yet whole heartedly, finds her way in a new environment. Slowly but surely, she makes some good friends along the way, particularly Hawthorne, as she plays pranks and breaks the rules in her innocence. Morrigan has an excellent role model in Jupiter North, who shows her the ropes and lets her be a child, a totally different experience to her home life. Jupiter was interesting as he was able to see the remanets of thoughts and feelings in people or objects. His younger relative Jack has the same ability, though he is not quite friends with Morrigan yet being a little older. They’re gifts comes with an unexpected price though. As in any good story, there are villains, both child and adult that she must contend with as a rite of passage in childhood. But to say more would be to give the game away! Nothing is as it seems as Morrigan learns some important lessons along the way. One of them being her talent. The talent which is needed in the final trial to pass. As Morrigan comes to realise the truth about herself and her talent it will change everything forever, leading to the second book in the series.

A wonderful read for those in need of a little escapism!
