What a concept! Women who are sick of being abused and murdered fight back! Literally! There are some thorny issues--the extreme violence, yes, but also the unquestioned assumption that weight loss surgery is only and always done for vanity or to conform to society's expectations and is never anything but a butchering. Walker abandons women whose decisions extend beyond vanity to issues of physical and mental health and well being. Assuming that there can be only one (incorrect) motivation for physical alteration is a huge weakness in the plot, even while the main character makes other alterations to her appearance as she becomes more radical. Neither the author nor editors noticed the contradiction? Hmm. Overall, though, Walker rightly condemns rape culture in all its abusive nuances and the story is emotionally satisfying and deliciously readable.
