Sometimes a story will come along that gives me a fresh look at Regency Romance and all the unspoken, but should be known, rules of the ton. If The Duke Demands is such a romance, and I was caught up in Miranda and Sebastian’s romance from the opening pages.

While Miranda has been given a Season by the Carlisle family, she’s really rather out of step with the ton. She already knows who she wants to spend her life with and has decided to simply take the beast by the horn so to speak and insure that their (her) love comes to its natural conclusion… or at least in her mind. Yet, her plan did not go as intended and now Miranda and the brother of the man she believes will grant her the love that she desires find themselves in a delicate situation… with humorous, at times desperate solutions to come.

Sebastian has set his mind to marry. And although that is a state of affairs that all men of his time and status eventually decide upon, for Sebastian it’s more about finding the “perfect” woman to stand at his side not some grand love connection. That is a luxury that he does not look for, certainly for his own reasons believes he’s not worthy of, and beyond what he thinks his station in life requires. Our hero is holding tight to some serious unwarranted guilt over something he had absolutely no control over… yet like many men has taken full responsibility for, at least in his own eyes, an event that he could not possibly have prevented. Yet now he wears the hair-shirt until he’s quite comfortable in that role. Miranda is about to shake the foundations of his misguided beliefs and show him his worth and the possibilities that could be his if only he would make the choice from his heart instead of his guilt.

Miranda’s belief that the wrong brother would bring her happiness is both sad and eventually amusing as she learns what being in love truly is all about. Watching the slow dance between Miranda and Sebastian as they learn about each other, become friends and then begin to see each other in a far different light was a delightful journey. I’ve had an enjoyable time with If The Duke Demands and am looking forward to continuing the series. I would definitely recommend this story to any Regency Romance reader who enjoys a good story, likable characters and watching two unlikely people discover that they are perfectly right for each other.

I own a paperback edition of this story.
