I have a soft spot in my heart for anything Tolkien. But, certainly do not mistake a 3-star review as middling. If you, as I, am interested in the history of the mythology behind Middle Earth, Tolkien's son has done an excellent job of collecting together the bits and pieces and tying it together into a (somewhat) cohesive package. But, if on the other hand, you are looking for something in the vein of Lord of the Rings, this is not (likely) the book for you; though Legolas Greenleaf is mentioned at one point, this is pre-history to the Silmarrillion.

So, if you enjoy the prose of Tolkien or you compulsively must collect all of his works regardless of their tangency, enjoy. But, if you want to continue the Lord of the Rings...well, perhaps reread Lord of the Rings.
