really liked it

3.5 really, but we’ll round up. I was underwhelmed by the first book in this series, The Half-Drowned King, but I decided to continue because I love the subject matter so much. The Sea Queen was a far better written book. More true historical elements were included here, so that may have added to the interest. Svanhild is a wonderful example of a Norse woman striving to be more than society will allow. Other female characters fell flat. Harald developed more of a personality, but still not enough. The man who the Sagas credit for uniting Norway is almost a sidekick to the somehow-never-wrong Ragnvald.

The author’s note suggests a third book. I’m sure I’ll read it. Maybe Linnea Hartsuyker will continue to improve.
