I really wanted to like this book. However, the explicit sex distracts from the story and is just inappropriate. It is not just that there is sex and that it is way too detailed but the context of the sex. After reading the scene where a scared 13 year old girl is forced to marry a grown man and their wedding night is described in detail I had to say enough.

"Come on" you say. "This type of stuff happens. It is realistic and gritty fantasy." Yes, this type of stuff does happen and I like realistic fiction. However, is it good for those details to fill our imagination? It would have been sufficient if Martin implied the sex instead of showing us in detail. This makes a huge difference. Unfortunately Martin chose not to do make this distinction and sullied an otherwise well written and engaging fantasy.
