** spoiler alert ** Donovan is unconscious after being hit by a vehicle. His girlfriend, Bea, is trying to make sense of his nearly incoherent mutterings. So far so good.
The chapters in Donovan's point-of-view are chaotic and sometimes downright weird. While this makes the first half of the story at times confusing, I was willing to follow along because I already knew the story had allusions to Dante's Inferno. So I was doubly confused when Donovan dies, because Dante survives his tour of hell.
Once I got past that and realized the rest of the story was Bea's sleuthing to discover the truth of what happened, I was able to enjoy the ride. Some people might find the first half "ruinous" but for those that have the patience to get through Donovan's explorations of the afterlife, the rest of the story will "sweep" readers to the end.
