How Richard Mayhew stumbled from his meaningless life as analyst in the City into the noisome, dangerous, invigorating land of London Below replete with monsters, mayhem, and magic.

Gaiman displays his usual inventiveness with regard to imagery and plot. He clearly means this book to be a tour guide of ancient London, c.f. the frontispiece that is illegible in my paperback edition. I'm sure that Neverwhere would be more enchanting for regular users of the London underground.
