it was amazing
bookshelves: fiction

I read this book in one day; it is beautifully written. The narrator's voice is powerful and melancholy, the characters sharply drawn and realistic, while remaining mysterious. Matar does an amazing thing in portraying Nuri's very large world--Egypt, France, Switzerland, England, Norway--while at the same time making it seem very small, as though covering that terrain was ordinary for a young boy. There is more than one disappearance in the novel; two of them made my heart hurt. I will definitely be reading Matar's first novel In the Country of Men asap.
