really liked it

The tale is related twice, from the two times JRR wrote it. Christopher follows both tellings with historical background information about the writing. He also adds related facts about the stories, providing excellent genealogies and historical references from the Mythos of the Tolkien world.

An example: We learn where the elvish phrase Frodo used in the lair of Shelob, actually originated from.

While the actual telling of the tale of the fall of Gondolin takes up only about a third of the book, the discussion and background information provided by Christopher in the rest of the book is very enlightening.
