As it happens sometimes, I had not read the original material behind one of my favorite movies of all time. And I was really surprised when I found out that behind a wonderful movie is a short story by Stephen King. An author who can also write stories without supernatural aspects that can leave you breathless. And this is one of them.

Andy Dufresne is a banker who is accused of murdering his wife and her lover. He is finally sentenced to two life sentences. When he is sent to Shawshank Prison in 1948, he does not talk much but he has an unnatural tranquility. Ellis Boyd Reddind called "Red" is a red-haired convict who can get what you need —from posters, gum, cigarettes or drugs—. Over time, Red and Andy become good friends and Andy tell him that he is innocent of the crime he is accused. It is Red who tell the story of his friend's hope and redemption.

The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. It went unnoticed in the Oscars that year, also because it had hard competition (Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump),so didn't win any award. But over the years many voices rose up saying how wonderful it was and the position it truly deserved among the best films of the decade and of all time. While the movie change things and add scenes (Red is red-haired not black for example), they are good decisions because they add to the story. So you can imagine what the short story is like.

From Red's perspective, we will know not only why he got in prison, also the decades locked in with Andy Dufresne, who suffers the worst humiliations imaginable but continues to stand firm and not succumb to sadness and despair. Over time, Andy becomes an important person in Shawshank as his talent and knowledge with numbers is and taxes is known. He manages to work in the prison library and improve the lives of his inmates friends, but he will be very persistent to do so.

Andy liked to play chess, carve figures with stones and minerals and hanging posters of female movie stars on his cell, being Rita Hayworth the first one he asked Red to get for him. Over the years, Andy and Red and their friends become inseparable. But Red notices that Andy is different, he seems to be made of another material, one unbreakable.

King made the characters alive and well fleshed out. With less than 180 pages we get to know the decades in the fictional jail of Maine and the political and corruption aspects behind the condemnation of innocent people. This story is not only about prison life and how life changes us and we get used to being locked up and we no longer know how to live, but how good things never die and one of them is hope, something that can keep a person alive and not let it fall despite all the bad that can happen.

Certainly worth reading. This story was also published in Different Seasons, a short story collection. Highly recommended. One of the best of the year.

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL

Como pasa a veces no había leído el material original detrás de una de mis películas favoritas de todos los tiempos. Y supongo que me llevé una gran sorpresa cuando me enteré que detrás de una maravillosa película e stá una historia corta de Stephen King, un autor que puede dedicarse también a escribir historias sin tintes sobrenaturales que te pueden dejar maravillado. Y esta es una de ellas.

Andy Dufresne es un banquero que es acusado de asesinar a su esposa y al amante de ésta. Al final es condenado a dos cadenas perpetuas. Cuando lo envían a la prisión de Shawshank en 1948  no suele hablar con nadie pero tiene un aura de tranquilidad. Ellis Boyd Redding o Red para los amigos es un convicto pelirrojo que puede conseguirte lo que necesites desde afiches, chicles, cigarrillos o drogas. Con el tiempo, Red y Andy se vuelven buenos amigos y Andy le confiesa que es inocente de lo que se le acusa. Es Red quien contará la historia de esperanza y redención de su amigo.

The Shawshank Redemption en inglés es una película de 1994 protagonizada por Tim Robbins y Morgan Freeman. Pasó desapercibida en los Oscars de ese año por tener una dura competencia (Pulp Fiction y Forrest Gump ni más ni menos) y no se llevó ningún premio. Pero con los años muchas voces se alzaron diciendo lo maravillosa que era y el puesto que merecía entre las mejores películas de la década y de todos los tiempos. Si bien la cinta agrega cambios y escenas (Red es pelirrojo por ejemplo), no molestan en absoluto porque están bien hechos y agregan más de lo que quitan. Entonces ya se pueden imaginar como es la historia corta. 

Desde la perspectiva de Red vamos a conocer no solo porqué él llegó a prisión sino como fueron las décadas encerrado con Andy Dufresne, quien sufre los peores vejámenes que se puedan imaginar pero siempre trata de mantenerse firme y no sucumbir a la tristeza y la desesperación y con el tiempo se convierte en una pieza importante en la cárcel, ya que se hace conocido su talento y conocimiento para las cuentas y los impuestos. Con esto logra encargarse de la biblioteca y logra mejorar la vida de sus compañeros, pero siendo muy persistente.



Andy le gustaba jugar al ajedrez, tallar figuras con piedras y minerales y le gustaban los afiches de las estrellas de cine del momento, siendo Rita Hayworth la primera elegida que le pide a Red que le consiga. Con los años los lazos entre el grupo de amigos se va cerrando y Andy y Red llegan a ser inseparables. Pero Red nota que Andy es diferente, parece estar hecho de otro material, uno que parece inquebrantable.

La narración de King hace que los personajes cobren vida y se hagan tridimensionales, se hace cercano y en poco más de ciento cincuenta páginas logremos conocer las décadas en la cárcel ficcional de Maine y los aspectos políticos y de corrupción detrás de la condena de personas inocentes. Esta historia no es solo sobre la vida carcelaria y cómo la vida nos cambia y nos acostumbramos a estar encerrados y ya no sabemos como ser de otra manera, sino como las cosas buenas nunca mueren y entre esas está la esperanza, algo que puede mantener la fe intacta de una persona y no dejarla caer a pesar de todo lo malo alrededor. 

Sin duda vale mucho la pena leer esta historia. En español se publicó en la colección de historias llamada Las cuatro estaciones. Altamente recomendada. De lo mejor del año, sin duda.
