it was amazing
bookshelves: read-in-2019

5 stars--it was amazing.

I was in the mood for a fantasy novel, and this book delivered. It has so many things I love:
* Standalone (no waiting for the next in the series. I really appreciate a single book)
* DRAGONS
* Just look at that cover
* Grimdark (or grimdark-adjacent, at least) but not rapey (or racist, sexist, etc. So refreshing!)
* Did I say dragons?
* Complicated political maneuvers
* Awesome magic
* Talking giant mongoose!
* A slow-burn lesbian romance
* Complex plot and characters
* Third person narration (first person can get wearying)
* I loved the "fantasy Japan" and "fantasy Queen Elizabeth's court" settings

I've heard some readers say this is slow, and overlong, and I get that. But for me, it built to a satisfying climax, and I really enjoyed reading this book.
