liked it

Full of rich, evocative descriptions and mostly enjoyable historical detail (use of the word "cute" was jarring) and interesting characters. But, alas, no plot to speak of. Around the middle of the book, the story switches from building suspense and engagement in the reader to an "and then they and then they" list approach to storytelling. Pity, because up until then it was headed for being my favorite historical of 2011. Squeaks by at a 3 stars for me.
