really liked it

Once again Christopher Tolkien allows us to see deep into the writing process of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien. Similar to the treatment of 'Beren and Luthien', 'The Fall of Gondolin' relates the story several times through different iterations, with commentary by C. Tolkien about what had changed with his father, illustrating these with letters to friends and publishers.

The changes are very interesting to see what changes and great themes continued through. One thing I really enjoyed was that compared to the brief description of all the characters in 'The Silmarillion', was how both Tuor and Idril become much more developed characters. The development of the Valar through Ulmo was also really interesting. Alan Lee once again provides beautiful artwork.

The only thing that I felt was cut short was the last few chapters as the analysis faded away during the story of Earendel.
