The Safe House
Kristine Walker's review

We learn the significance of the title near the end of this novel where we're given a surprise that few readers will have anticipated. The author has left clues for us along the way, but if you're like this reader, you'll have looked for them and missed them. A trauma counsellor is asked to take in a victim who has just witnessed the murder of her parents. Young Finn Mackenzie is quiet when she first arrives, but she and Dr. Lauschen soon become friends while the local police ostensibly search for her parents' killers. Checking in on the three (Dr. Lauschen has a young daughter), are Dr. Michael Daley, Finn's GP and the local inspector. This is the first Nicci French novel I've read, and I found it compulsive reading. I read it in a day because I found the plot so suspenseful. From the reviews I've read, this isn't the author's best novel, so I look forward to reading the others.
