A beautiful story about a determined little girl who overcomes stereotypes and cultural images of norm. Grace loves acting and make believe and when her school decides to put on Peter Pan, she wants the lead in the play. But, her classmates say that she can't be Peter because she is black and a girl. But, she learns all of the lines and practices all day so that she is the best one at try outs. In the end, everyone in the class agrees that she is the best person for Peter Pan.

The book also shows that Grace is raised by her single mom and her grandmother, both of who are very supportive. Adult readers will recognize the mom's frustration at the racism which Grace faces.

The illustrations are realistic water color.
