A cute story about a little known service. Frances, Peter, and their father man the lighthouse on a remote island. Storms have made it impossible for supply boats to reach them, and they are running very low on food and other items. Christmas is going to be a small celebration until a plane flies by and drops a bundle of food, necessities and gifts for them. Frances is a well developed character, especially for so few pages. The illustrations capture the setting well, although a little explanation may be needed for children unfamiliar with lighthouse life or approximately the 1930s. An author's note explaining the Flying Santa Service adds factual information to the story, that few people outside of the Coast Guard are aware of. Overall a great story to share with children in grades K-4 over the holiday season.
