As I become a more discerning writer and reader, certain things about this series bug me that didn't bug me before -- J.D. Robb's tendency to headhop, for one, as well as the way she takes advantage of any opportunity where Eve and Roarke are alone to emphasize how great their sex life is. And since this particular book dealt with the occult, and witchcraft in particular, I originally feared a lot of prejudice and misconception.

Luckily, J.D. Robb was able to handle the pagan characters and concepts with respect and, as far as I can see, accuracy, despite the fact that Detective Eve Dallas thinks it's all hogwash. The murder mystery plot in this installment started a little slow, but the book really picked up in its second half. Before that, the details about Satanic rituals were scintillating enough to keep one reading. J.D. Robb creates intriguing secondary characters to people the murder plots, while I continue to admire her continuing characters (particularly Eve and Peabody, although I could do with quite a bit less Roarke -- which has been my complaint about the series from the beginning). But the real reason that this book earned a four-star rating from me despite some of the series' ongoing weaknesses is that this one finally kept me guessing until the end about who the murderer was -- and she didn't take it in the direction I feared she might, which made it doubly satisfying.

After this book, I have a big six-book gap in my J.D. Robb collection. I must get hunting!
