Where Are You Roaming, Louise Saint-Quentin?
I've never been a fan of series and sequels. I do read them but I'm unwilling to read a series past the third book. For that reason, I've never read one Harry Potter book. (Yeah. I said it. I'm the only surviving member of the human race that has not read HP.) My point is, when Book One ends up being on my All-Time Favorites shelf I don't want it ruined by a just-ok sequel; a mediocre sequel has the ability to tarnish my love for the original.
Then I discovered French author Gabrielle Dubois and her amazing character Louise Saint-Quentin from MISTRESS MINE. Not since Gone with the Wind's feisty Scarlett O'Hara had I fallen in love with such a strong, fiery female character! I could not get enough of the unconventional Louise. MISTRESS MINE went straight to the top of my all-time favorite reads. The closer I got to the end of the story, the harder I tried to slow down my reading pace. I never wanted Louise's journey to end! I was so in love with MISTRESS MINE that I reached out to Gabrielle Dubois and begged her to continue to translate her beautiful French stories. Like a woman possessed, I needed to know more about Louise. Her story couldn't end; she still had so much living to do. Louise was my friend that I lived vicariously through. Well, apparently other fans of Dubois and MISTRESS MINE agreed. The show must go on! Dubois had Jane Hentges begin translation on Book Two, WHERE ARE YOU ROAMING? (Hentges also translated Book One and what talent!) Poor Gabrielle. I probably drove her crazy asking over and over: "When can we expect Book 2?!" Me! I was requesting a sequel. I had to know if Louise found her happily ever after, especially after she searched far and wide, going from one adventure to the next.
Finally the day arrived. WHERE ARE YOU ROAMING? was released on August 1, 2018. I was too impatient to wait for a physical copy so I ordered both editions - one Kindle copy and one lovely physical copy. Now, I gave a lot of thought on how I was going to write my review for a sequel that lived up to the original. Oh, yes! It did. As I savored every page, every delicious chapter, I decided that I could not write a review without giving away very important plots. For those that haven't had the opportunity of meeting the fabulous Louise Saint-Quentin, it would be unfair to spoil the fun. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every glorious moment with Louise and those that have come in and out of her life. Dubois is one of those authors that gives attention to fine detail and sneaks in true historical tidbits that reinforce my love for historical fiction.
I loved both books! Once again, with tears in my eyes (I'm not kidding), I must say goodbye to Louise Saint-Quentin. I hug this beautiful book and place it front and center on my bookshelf. There, every time I pass each precious book, I'll smile and remember my adventures with the headstrong Louise Saint-Quentin.
Now, I'm off to beg Gabrielle (with the help of Jane Hentges) to translate more of her French books to English. Thank you, Gabrielle! Thank you for sharing your love of reading and writing. I'll always be one of your greatest admirers. Your stories take me to the most magical places.
