it was amazing

This book kept me company when I happened to be staying alone in a cottage - and what welcome company it was! Living characters and vivid locations, acute observations, stand-alone anecdotes that ring delightfully true. It's about motherhood, about courage and mental illness, about tragic events that send ripples down the generations. Young skips easily and with an impressive eye for detail through eight decades so that we come to know people as children and watch their lives unfold, followed by the lives of their children and grandchildren. I loved the deft handling of time and place, the reassuring sense of generations entwining.
