I heard about this book after watching the show "Turn Washington's Spies" (I will make the disclaimer we almost stopped watching the show with the inappropriate scenes we had to skip, but it seemed to lessen as the seasons went on). This is the nonfiction book the series is loosely based on.
I found it so interesting that George Washington had this secret unknown spy ring he depended on. After watching the show I wanted to know what was real and what was dramatized for television. I found the characters of Caleb Brewster, Robert Townsend, Robert Rogers, Nathan Hale, John Hale, Benjamin Tallmadge, Abraham Woodhull etc. so interesting! These men sacrificed so much and no one ever knew about it! If I hadn't watched the show, I think it would've been harder to keep the characters straight and to feel connected to them. But the author did a great job of making the nonfictional accounts come to life. I love the real Caleb Brewster as much as I loved him on the show!
One thing I was left wondering was when did they find all the letters and uncover the ring? I would've liked to hear more about what that process was like. I enjoyed that there was an epilogue and I am amazed how much they know about these real life people with it all happening so long ago. Good thing George Washington saved all the top secret letters he was supposed to destroy instantly ha!
