A young girl and her family are forced to flee their home in Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War. After traveling to various refugee camps, her family is sent to Alabama where they struggle to assimilate. Told as a series of heartbreakingly poignant chronological poems, Ha's story is one of growing up under the shadow of extreme loss. On the bright side, Ha's story reflects the true meaning of neighbors and illuminates all the ways in which we are able to heal each others' spirits. Upper-Elementary and Middle School readers will delight in Thanhha Lai's richly sensuous descriptions of life in exotic Saigon. Masterfully written, Inside Out and Back Again is well on its way to becoming a classic.
