The quality of the writing was great, as can be expected from Ha Jin. However, the story didn't captivate me. It was long. It is basically the story of an immigrant family's life, and includes the boring and the everyday events as well as the challenges and those turning point events that change the characters' lives or perspectives on life. There were some timing and tense changes in the story in the second half of the book that didn't sit well with me, beacuse they didn't seem to be consistent with the rest of the book. Overall, it could have benefitted from more time spent revising and editing the story. The book lacked the same power and spirit that were present in Waiting and War Trash.
