“As for loving America or not loving America, those aren't your problems, either. Your word for love is survival. Everything else is a story that isn't about you.”

–Elaine Castillo

Book No. 19 of 2018

With so many great pieces of Asian-American art and entertainment dropping this year- here’s one that impressed me from the world of books. As much as I love to read books with widespread international settings, I’ve never read anything set in the Philippines until now.

The story is set in the 90’s where a newcomer to the US tries to bury her past as a student-dissident during the Marcos regime. There were some parts that felt long, but overall it was a story well-told.
