This book suffered from coming out at roughly the same time as The Night Circus, being in more or less the same genre, having more or less the same themes, and being not as good and not as advertised. But it's the not as good that is the most important. Like the Night Circus, this book takes up a magical circus with steam punk influences. The characters are not as well developed and neither is the world. It struck me that the author of The Night Circus talks about being influenced by the Theatre of Punchdrunk and the immersive world they create and this author talks about intentionally eschewing the theatre in New York. Well, it shows. Perhaps if the author were less afraid of the theatrical it would help them further develop their characters, their story, and their setting. After all, it's about a circus, not an accounting agency. A little theatrical flair is called for.
