it was amazing

I almost didn't read this book, because my sister wasn't crazy over it. However, it was on hold at the library, so I decided to give it a chance. I'm so glad I did, because I loved it! I think my sister's dissatisfaction with it was the somewhat hidebound ideas of the main character, a retired British Army major. However, I thought the characterization was consistent with a man in that situation, and I love that he grew through the book. One line characterizes most of his struggles: "... and as she disappeared, blue dress into deep night, he knew he was a fool. Yet at that moment, he could not find a way to be a different man." I loved the writing, loved the characters, loved the ending. Definitely recommend!
