really liked it
bookshelves: 2011, fantasy

The criticisms of this book, in other reviews, are largely justified in my opinion. This is a huge book and we don't really get to learn much about the backstory or why events are happening beyond cryptic hints, we meet lots of characters and don't always care about them. But what can I say? I'm a sucker for a huge, sprawling fantasy epic and that is exactly what this is. There are three interesting female characters, two of whom don't really interact much with men in their plotline which allows them top billing, and I'm hoping that the later books will focus on more women (after all I believe that the Heralds were evenly divided between male and female so hopefully the fighting won't all be men), and also on the other countries who are less generic warrior society.
