This is a superhero story with more internal conflict than plot conflict. When Zach's father Tom Harriman dies, Zach learns that his father was possibly more than Zach believed him to be. As he tries to find out how his father died, and who was responsible, Zach starts noticing that he has some unusual powers and is encountering some unusual characters, including old Mr. Herbert. Zach must figure out who Uncle John and Mr. Herbert are and whether their intentions for him are in his best interests. He also has to elude the mysterious Bads, who seem to want Zach for something. Zach's close relationship with Kate, the smart and brave daughter of his family's live-in housekeeper, will help to make this book appeal to girls (other than Zach's mother, who is not a particularly interesting character, Kate is the only female character in the book).
