Between Shades of Gray
I have read a lot of historical fiction on this time period, but mostly about Holocaust & aftermath. I have read the "text book" accounts of Stalin & his reign of terror in Eastern Europe, but to read it in a historical fiction novel made it more real for me... sounds weird, but true. Where Hitler was persecuting the Jews for being Jews, Stalin actually sent people to Siberia (for real) for doing, saying or even rumors of saying anything deemed "against the government". Great writing! I love how she describes some of the characters, not by name, but by the way they appeared to her. For example: "the bald man" & "the grouchy woman". Such a powerful story of survival!
