I used this book as a reference this year during Nanowrimo, as my story took place in 1888 (or thereabouts). The book does span an entire century, but it did help me with some details about whether or not things like electricity or indoor plumbing was used, how people lived in the Midwest pioneer days, and some of the medical information. If you need more detailed information for your novel, this might not be specific enough for you, but it definitely gives a general sense of the times and might give you some details you wouldn't have thought about (for me, it was the section talking about dentistry!).
