I am not actually reading this one, but Italiani, brava gente? by the same author. It is a 300-page essay debunking the stereotype that Italians are, after all, nice people. We Italians have always tried to convince ourselves that we were not that Fascist after all, that we were not really supporting the Nazi regime, and that our colonization attempts were in good faith. Not true. For example, the Italians were the first in history to use chemical weapons against people, namely the Ethiopians that we tried to subdue (unsuccessfully, of course).

The author, Angelo Del Boca, is a respected historian and journalist, and his writing is well-supported and engaging. Too bad he is breaking my heart.
