The past isn’t finished with us yet, even when we think it’s over and best forgotten. A knock at the door might be all it takes to pull us back in time.
We begin with a marriage proposal for a woman named Ola, a happy event that results in cracking open that door, letting in memories and emotions that have been kept hidden away. What Ola has chosen to turn away from are the painful events of 35 years ago, when her first marriage ended and her mother, Sarah, disappeared. Adding to her current troubles is her elderly father’s health; Jack has been slipping deeper into dementia and, more recently, struggling with an infection. Accompanied by her grown son, Matt, Ola visits Jack in his nursing home to check on his progress. Jack is confused, lost in his own mind, and rambling on in a way that’s easy to dismiss as being a result of his dementia.
The visit, and something Jack says, has unforeseen consequences; Matt is now determined to learn about the grandmother he never knew and what happened to her, no matter where that might lead to. Ola is the keeper of Jack’s things and it’s there, in a pile of old boxes that Ola won’t touch, that Matt begins his search.
The clues send him from one person after another who was, in some way, connected to either Jack’s business or Sarah’s university work. With so many questions and so little information to go on, Matt struggles to reconcile himself to the past. Who is Henry, and why is he the only person Jack will respond to? Why has Uncle Adrian exiled himself from the family? Was Sarah abducted and killed by a stranger? Or, worse, is the truth much closer to home?
The author deftly takes you through a series of tantalizing leads, dead ends, and twists and turns; all done with clear and steady prose that you can have confidence in. This is a writer who knows what he is doing. Unnerving and taut, with some lighter moments of romance and humor for the occasional respite, it will keep you guessing all the way to the end. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good mystery, missing person cases, whodunits, and old-fashioned gumshoe detection.
