As a gardener and writer, I saw The Orchard on the rack at my local bookstore, and I wondered if it was good. I read a lot of books about gardening for work after all. It had a Staff Pick sticker on it so I asked Cathy, who is co-owner of Best of Books if she'd read it. She looked at me with excitement, nodding. She said she couldn't put it down. It was about a girl who married an apple farmer. My thoughts traveled to green fields and apple trees lined up in rows. I could see them throughout the seasons. In bloom in spring and full of promise. Lost in my pastoral reverie, I still heard Cathy say, "She warned them about the chemicals."

I held up one hand like a traffic cop. "Don't tell me anymore. I'm hooked," I said.

Well, the book is about so much more than farming and chemicals, but the taste of garlic covers every page. Read it, and you will discover why I couldn't put it down either.
