really liked it
bookshelves: novels
Recommended for: almost everyone

Thomas puts a nice spin on the contemporary novel by injecting a lot of interesting ideas - poststructural theory, quantum mechanics, theology - into what remains, at heart, a tight little adventure story. What's most impressive is how seamless the combination is; the ideas don't come off as pretentious, and the plot doesn't seem tacked on. One really does leave this book feeling smarter than when they started it. My only complaint is that the writing style itself can be kind of flat and dull, but as the main character spends much of the novel in a state of extreme emotional detachment, I guess that's to be expected. Also, I didn't buy the romance at the end; the main character was much more interesting when she wasn't falling in love.
