really liked it
bookshelves: kenya-reading, just-for-fun

Pierce Brown is a little overly repetitive with his prose in places (telling us old information, sometimes with the exact same wording, as though it were new - or spelling out information he already hinted at clearly enough to make the explanation unnecessary), but overall I was impressed by the lyricism and beauty of Brown's writing and the depth of emotion he manages to achieve. Yes, there are definite echoes of The Hunger Games and its world (and at times some of the same pitfalls), but this is ultimately a more robust, interesting, and believable version of its themes. And one that feels less emotionally manipulative.

One of the most addictive reads I've come across in a long time.
