really liked it
bookshelves: kids-read

I read this after one of my kids read it and said he really liked it. An enjoyable read, even if it could use some heavy editing. It seems the author made the book long for the sake of being long, the type of books the main character likes. But at least it was a fun story with some interesting characters.

I had to bump this up to 4 stars due to one fact. The main character, a kid, actually tells his dad about the odd things going on and his dad actually believes and helps him. So many young hero fantasy stories include adults who are clueless or unbelieving, if not absent. I found this to be a refreshing change.

That said, I don't know if the story has staying power. I wasn't hooked enough to run out and read the other books (yet). Even my son has avoided reading the 3rd book for some reason, at least as of Jan 2012. But I'll still keep this first one rounded up to 4 stars.
