The Garden of Last Days
Jun 11, 2008
In his followup to the mega-successful House of Sand and Fog, Dubus pushes himself to tackle a larger cast of characters, from a frustrated stripper to her three-year-old daughter to one of the 9/11 terrorists, and confines their story almost entirely within that weekend before the attacks. Readers who liked the way that Dubus settled inside his characters' thoughts in House and created wide open spaces for their personalities to emerge will find themselves in familiar but expansive territory, and even when you think you know where the interlocking stories are headed, he still manages to catch you off-guard a few times.
