Dark story but original. Friendship or love relationship of Leiser and Avery formed the background for feelings of anguish when one reaches the end of the book. Its the anguish of reading about Avery helplessness in saving his polish friend when he was left for dead by his British superiors when the mission failed. A sad ending not unlike 'a spy who came in from the cold'. George Smiley played a small role in the novel, but enough for one to get a sense of his cold unfeeling character that is suited to carry out ruthless jobs without sentiment.
