really liked it

Very creepy and strange. A girl grows up sequestered in a house with a dying woman (the wife of a formerly famous magician) that all the neighborhood kids say killed her children. She has never met or talked to other children, and only leaves the house to check on the menagerie of birds that live in the back yard and squawk at her whenever she comes near. But when the old woman dies, she starts to dig into the real story of what happened to the children all those years ago.

Once this book really got started it was really compelling, but it starts slow. And the slow start isn't aided by the fact that you can see the plot twists coming a mile away. But it's still a great read and incredibly original.
