it was ok
bookshelves: fiction

I read Salvage the Bones because it was the first fiction I have seen on the topic of Hurricane Katrina and won the 2011 National Book Award for Fiction. I gave it two stars for those reasons- but really it's only a one star for me.

The story line is uniquely told from the voice of a young poor pregnant girl who is very limited by her circumstances. I appreciated the attempt to expose her situation but found nothing in the story to move me beyond being a very distant viewer. The hurricane served more of a back drop and also was lacking in its emotional draw.

I wanted to feel more but I didn't. What a disappointment!
